Explore the Oldest National Forest in the East, starting in 1914, Edith Vanderbilt — widow of George W. Vanderbilt — sold approximately 86,700 acres of the Biltmore Estate to the federal government, including the site of the nation’s first school of forestry, now preserved at The Cradle of Forestry historic site. Over the next few decades, more tracts were added, and today the forest offers access to the beauty and wilderness of the N.C. Blue Ridge Mountains.

DuPont Forest, is a 12,500-acre state forest, located in Henderson and Transylvania counties. Cedar Rock Mountain a 4.5-mile loop hike in DuPont Forest provides wonderful mountain views and dramatic scenery. There are many more  hiking, biking, and waterfalls trails to explore as well.
